Objective: To teach basic principles of classical thermodynamics. To train students to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems in thermodynamics. To teach the aplication of second law analysis methods for thermodynamic systems. To train students to analyze the power and refrigeration cycles to determine thermodynamic properties of substances, and to solve engineering problems involving air-conditioning processes. To teach the application of thermodynamic laws to combustion processes and the concepts of chemical and phase equilibrium.
Content: Basic concepts and definitions. Properties of a pure substance. Equations of state. Work and heat. First law of thermodynamics. Internal energy and enthalpy. Second law of thermodynamics. Carnot cycle. Entropy. Irreversibility and Availability, Power Systems, Gas Mixtures, Thermodynamic Relations, Chemical Reactions, Chemical Equilibrium.
